# Who Can Access My Zitadel Cloud Data, and From Where?

## A short explanation of how Zitadel's support and engineering teams access Customer Data, the circumstances under which each may do so, where those teams are located, and the technical and legal safeguards that apply - including international transfer protections under our Data Processing Agreement.

When you choose a specific data region for Zitadel Cloud, your Customer Data - including backups - is stored and processed exclusively within data center infrastructure in that region. This article explains the one exception to that commitment: access by Zitadel's own support and engineering personnel, who may need to interact with your data to provide support or operate the Service.

Two kinds of access, two different rules:

**Support personnel** access your Customer Data only at your request or instruction - for example, when you report an issue and a support engineer needs to look into it. Support access is never initiated independently.

**Engineering personnel** may access Customer Data independently of a specific customer request, when necessary to:
\- optimize performance,
\- investigate and resolve incidents, or
\- otherwise maintain the availability and security of the Service.

This independent access is what makes rapid, proactive incident response possible, resolving an issue before it becomes customer-visible often requires engineers to act immediately.

### Where are these teams located?

As of October 31, 2026  Zitadel's support and engineering personnel are based in the following countries: Europe (Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Belgium, Finland), Switzerland, United States, Argentina, United Arab Emirates.

Unlike your selected data region, access by support and engineering personnel is not restricted to a single country or region.

### What safeguards apply?

Regardless of where access originates, every instance of support or engineering access to Customer Data is:

- Authorized: Subject to internal approval before access is granted
- Logged: Every access is recorded for audit purposes
- Reviewed: Access is periodically reviewed as part of our security program
- Encrypted: Conducted exclusively over authenticated, encrypted connections
- Confidential: Subject to the confidentiality and security obligations in our [Data Processing Agreement](https://zitadel.com/legal/data-processing-agreement)

Where such access involves a transfer of personal data outside the EEA, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom, it is additionally covered by:

- the Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) incorporated into our DPA, which apply regardless of the destination country, and
- for access originating in the United States specifically, Zitadel's self-certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (DPF), the UK Extension to the DPF, and the Swiss-U.S. DPF — see our [Privacy Policy](https://zitadel.com/legal/privacy-policy) for details.

### Does this affect my data residency guarantee?

No. Your selected data region governs where your Customer Data is stored and processed — that commitment is unaffected by where a support or engineering employee happens to be physically located when they remotely access your data under the controls described above.
